Movies 14 & 15 Wrong Turn & Wrong Turn 2: Dead End

Wrong Turn is a blatant rip off of The Hills Have Eyes, the main difference being it takes place in the woods instead of the desert.

Wrong turn is not a good movie. The actors are passable (and had I seen the movie when released the only one I would know was Eliza Dushku, but after watching it now I knew who they all were), but the generic  backwoods slasher story renders it almost totally immobile. The movie isn't scary either, for the most part that is. The only tense scenes in the movie happen about 45 minutes in and only last about 10 minutes total. The movie is a waste of time. The kills are unoriginal and boring. The script has some good ideas but they're overshadowed by its inability to stand out from other pictures within the genre.

My favorite bit of trivia that I noticed just from watching it and being a horror geek is the second couple to die on screen went on to be a couple together AGAIN in the remake of Dawn of the Dead just a year later.

Wrong Turn is a boring useless horror movie, that isn't serious enough to be scary and has no value of fun at all; watch The Hills Have Eyes instead.

Wrong Turn 2 starts out great, I found the opening scene to be more enjoyable than the entire first movie. The set up is also good, with an original story that when presented seems interesting to mix it up with the backwoods horror genre, and it is at first. The story is about a reality show that "takes place" after the apocalypse and the contestants are left in the woods to fend for themselves for a couple of days all the while doing challenges for the show. Sounds good to me, just take the drama of making a reality show and throw in some cannibalistic mountain men and this movie should be a winner.

The film progresses well and is a lot of fun to watch for the first 30/40 minutes. The gore is pretty good and the kills are actually really cool throughout the entire movie. After the first 2 acts are done the movie goes down hill fast. Once you get to the point that all the characters know whats going on it stops being fun. At this point the movie becomes a pile of unoriginal ideas, cliches, and stupidity. This movie wouldn't exist without the other backwoods slashers before it and it brings nothing new to the genre. I had heard this movie was a lot better than the original, and it is, but that doesn't mean it's a good movie it is however a very well made bad movie.

  1. I liked Wrong Turn but that has a lot to do with Eliza Dushku. The only good thing about 2 was Henry Rollins.
